Women Who Made History In The Film Industry: Lucille Ball
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we’d like to recognize leading women in our industry and the incredible ladies who made cinematic history. Women have been an integral part of the video and film industry since it’s early origins, but history is still being made in the present. In this blog, we highlight the accomplishments of studio executive, producer and actress Lucille Ball.
Lucille Désirée Ball was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She enrolled in many acting classes as a child and in 1925, her mother sent her to John Murray Anderson School for Dramatic Arts. In 1933, she moved to Hollywood, California. She met Desi Arnaz, a Cuban American actor, while working on set in 1940. They eloped a year later.
She co-founded Desilu Productions with her husband in 1950. When the couple split, Arnaz decided to sell his ownership of the company to Ball. The deal made her the first woman to own a major television studio. Desilu Productions produced many influential television shows, such as The Untouchables and Star Trek. Most famously for Ball, it also produced I Love Lucy, which she starred in. It became the first television show to be inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
Ball was pioneer in comedy and she influenced generations of comedians. Her work behind the scenes with Desilu Productions transformed the way studios created and produced movies and television shows- like filming in front of a live studio audience and using three cameras. She retired from the business in 1974 and passed away in 1989 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 77.
