NXCAM IS NEXT
Sony has been busy releasing & announcing cameras…what is this, the 5th announcement this year? Last week on November 8th they unveiled the PMW-F3 large sensor camera to be available in February 2011 for $16,000. The F3 is largely competing with the RED. NOW Sony has announced another Super 35mm CMOS large sensor camera, not yet named, will be apart of the NXCAM family and shoot AVCHD. This prosumer camera has got to be an answer to the Panasonic AG-AF100 which was announced at NAB this year and is said to be shipping by the New Year for $5,000.
Sony claims the Super 35mm sized sensor is comparable in picture area to a motion picture film frame used in Hollywood features. The sensor is designed to have a wide exposure latitude to pick up even the slightest subtleties in detail and color gradation. This sensor will allow for a shallow depth of field to create the desired bokeh effect.
The NXCAM will have an E-mount interchangeable lens. The E-mount system has a very shallow distance between the lens mount and the sensor to give the DP a variety of 35mm lens to choose from with the correct third-party adapters.
The NXCAM is still under development but I for one am anxious to see the images it can produce.
