Panasonic Goes Wireless with the HPX-3100
Have you ever found yourself wishing that you could communicate telepathically on set? Panasonic just unveiled a versatile wireless system that could be the answer to your prayers. The system will transmit user-selected metadata from the camera to any smart device. In theory, this would be a way for the director of photography telling the assistant camera operator, “Hey buddy, here’s what I’m doing,” without speaking. Using a WLAN connection, the Panasonic AJ-WM30 wireless module, coupled with the Panasonic AJ-SFU3100 software, can transmit an array of data from the Panasonic AJ-HPX3100 Varicam to any PC, smart phone, or tablet device.
With the AJ-WM30 you can instantly transfer input & display, thumbnails, text memo input, and camera status (format, recording time, batter length, etc.) For those projects with a quick turnaround, the text memo input and thumbnail display can allow a script supervisor or director/producer to immediately input notes and tag clips to expedite the editing process. The ability to directly download camera information into a smart device would allow projects being shot all over the world to share vital camera information on-the-fly. A director of photography in Seattle can download the frame rate, resolution, and shutter speed of his Panasonic AJ-HPX3100 and immediately send it to a director of photography in Shanghai working on the same project.
The Panasonic AJ-WM30 and AJ-SFU3100 will be display at the NAB Show in Las Vegas and will be on sale in April 2011.
