The AVC Ultra codec is Panasonic’s pinnacle release of 2012, and this fall their first camera intended for that codec upgrade will be released. In addition to recording with the AVC Ultra codec, the Panasonic HPX600 will be able to shoot in AVC Intra, DVCPROHD, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO codecs. Along the AVC Ultra upgrade the Panasonic HPX600 will offer wireless metadata from the camera, proxy recording, and another upgrade for variable frame rates.

Sony NEX-FS700: Sony Goes for Higher & Slower

This is an upgrade from last year’s popular Sony NEX-FS100 but with two major additions. First, the NEX-FS700 has a future 4K upgrade for its EXMOR Super 35mm sensor. The EXMOR Super 35mm sensor is the same sensor that is in the NEX-FS100.

S-Log, or Sony Log, is an option in Sony CineAlta cameras like the PMW-F3, F23, F35 and F65. The Arri Alexa allows you to shoot in S-Log or Log-C mode to capture a cinema quality image and accomplish negative film quality latitude. S-Log and Log-C mode captures an image with the greatest amount of range in tonal reproduction and the lowest noise floor and highest ceiling.
