A Return to Their Roots: Sony and the New NEX-EA50H
It’s another month and here comes another new camera release. Unlike the Super 35mm digital or slow motion cameras that have highlighted the releases of 2012, Sony has gone back to the core of what made shooting HD popular. The new Sony NEX-EA50H is what Sony is calling an entry level professional grade camera at around the $4000 price point. The EA50H utilizes the EXMORE APS HD CMOS sensor that other cameras in the NEX series use, and it can shoot up to 1920 x 1080 at 60p shooting at 28Mpbs. The camera is also an interchangeable lens camera. It will take Sony E-Mount series lenses, so if you already own some E-mount lenses with your other Sony cameras, the EA50H could be a perfect addition. The EA50H can record to SD, SDHC, SDXC, and of course on Sony’s Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. Along with these recordable media, the camera will also take Sony’s new Mirroring Memory Stick that can record two copies at once on the same card, as well as their external HXR-FMU128 flash memory recorder.
Features:
- Shoulder mount style for stable, long time shooting and professional appearance
- Supplied powered 18-200 zoom lens realizes smooth & slow zoom operation
- Exmor™ APS-C HD CMOS Sensor produces high quality, creative video images with low noise and high sensitivity in low light conditions
- Captures 16.1 megapixel still pictures with higher picture quality
- Progressive Recording: 60p/30p/24p, 50p/25p
- Two built-in XLR audio input connectors
So you’ve upgraded your camera crew’s film arsenal to the newest specialty camera, but sometimes it’s a tough sell to the client looking to do that the basic corporate shoot or the run-and-gun event coverage. Sometimes they just want a camera that shoots high quality HD and has the versatility to get the footage they need without breaking the bank. The EA50H can shoot that event coverage at 1080p with 28Mbps and with the AVCHD 2.0 compression can get high-quality footage at a smaller file size. With the HVR-FMU128 flash memory recorder you can record up to 10 hours at 28Mbps and 12 hours at 24Mbps. For those who worry about file corruption or want that backup file, Sony’s new Mirror Memory Stick will allow you to make duplicate recording on the same card. The design is reminiscent of the Sony Z series HDV cameras, but the Sony NEX-EA50H sports a shoulder mount that emulates the ENG style camera more than the handheld camera. In the year of the large sensor specialty camera it’s refreshing to see a camera that is cost-effective and versatile.
