Let Them Rock!
This year’s Leap Day was a very special one for a group of young musicians….
On February 29, the non-profit Let Them Rock held a fund-raising showcase to help raise money for music education, and Crews Control’s Doug Plumer was there to capture it all.
“I was told it was going to be a run-and-gun shoot from the start,” Plumer said. “And it was!” The shoot involved footage from the performance of the young musicians, awards presentations, and interviews. Plumer was faced with a huge challenge of capturing all the footage in a short amount of time with only one camera – and he got it!
“I went with a Sony FS7 for this shoot,” he said, “and a variety of lenses. I used a Canon 18-55mm f2.8 for the run-and-gun shots, Sony 28-135 f4 for stage footage, and a Nikon 50mm f1.2 for interviews.”
With so much going on, it was a challenge for Plumer to capture everything, but he rose to the occasion beautifully. He was able to scope out the scene early to find on-stage and backstage angles, a quiet place back stage to light up for interviews, as well as a prime tripod spot at the front of the stage for audio. Plumer’s audio tech was familiar with the house mixer, and was able to utilize it for exceptional audio.
As the night unfolded, Plumer said it was clear that he was witnessing some of the most incredible young musical talent in the country. The highlight was a drum off between veteran drummer Mark Schulman (of Foreigner and Simple Minds fame) and a young protégé.
“It was a great night for a great cause,” concludes Plumer, “it was amazing to be able to capture video for such a fun event.”
